LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Kentucky softball team is enjoying one of the best seasons in its 11-year history, led by seniors Brooke Marnitz and Katie Campbell. Marnitz leads the nation in home runs per game with 0.49, while Campbell is also among the nation?s best.

Marnitz, a Lexington native, currently leads all of Division I with 0.49 home runs per game. The senior shortstop added to that total with her 18th homer of the season in the Cats? win over Eastern Kentucky. Marnitz is second in the nation in slugging percentage at .963, trailing only Cal Poly?s Lisa Modglin who owns a slugging percentage of 1.041 this season. She ranks third in the nation with 1.37 RBI per game and is 24th with 1.0 runs per game. Marnitz is also among the leaders in batting average, ranking 50th with a .421 average entering tonight?s contest.

Campbell is ranked 32nd nationally with 0.29 home runs per game, 41st with a .762 slugging percentage and is 68th with 0.91 RBI per contest.

The Wildcats? team offense ranks among the top in the nation, as well. Kentucky is fourth with a team slugging percentage of .536, sixth with 1.29 home runs per game and tenth with 0.31 triples per game. UK is 20th in scoring with 5.91 runs per contest and ranked 27th with a .308 team batting average.

The Kentucky defense leads the SEC and is also ranked nationally. The Cats are third with 0.57 double plays per game.

?I’m so proud of the way our offense has responded game after game and week after week,? said third-year head coach Eileen Schmidt. ?Top to bottom, this is one of, if not the toughest, conference in the country. The hard work the players have put in under Coach (Brooke) Monroe?s guidance has paid off. We just need to continue to push through and stay focused on the task at hand.?

The Wildcats will have a chance to add to its totals tomorrow night, Apr. 11, when it travels to Louisville for a single game. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
