BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Kentucky softball team dropped adoubleheader to the seventh-ranked LSU Tigers Friday night at Tiger Park. TheSoutheastern Conference Western Division leading Tigers captured the opener2-0, and then used two big innings in the nightcap en route to a 7-0 victory.

Led by strong pitching performances from Keary Camunas and Britni Sneedin the opener, the Cats and the Tigers battled to a scoreless tie through thefirst five innings before LSU drew first blood in the sixth.

LSU second baseman Stephanie Hastings reached on a bunt single and TaraAsbill followed with sacrifice bunt, moving Hastings to second. Ashlee Ducotereached on an error by UK third baseman Andrea Eilertson and Hastings advancedto third. First baseman Shaunte’ Fremin singled back to the pitcher, scoringHastings as LSU took a 1-0 lead. Designated player Ashley Lewis singled to leftas Ducote scored from third for the game’s final margin.

Sneed struck out six batters, improving to 21-5 on the season. Camunas,who struck out four, fell to 18-12.

In the nightcap, UK (32-25, 11-11 Southeastern Conference) squandered apotential scoring chance in the top of the third when Nikki Jones was pickedoff at first with runners on first and third and two out to end the inning.

LSU (49-8, 22-5) used three hits and three UK errors in the fourth totake a 3-0 lead. An inning-ending double play allowed the Cats to escape.

The Tigers put four more runs on the board in the fifth as six of thefirst seven LSU batters in the inning hit safely, completing the sweep over thevisiting Cats.

Ashley Lewis improved to 19-3 with the win, while Jen Howlanddropped to8-6. Jones recorded two hits for the Cats.

UK returns to action on Sunday, April 30 when the Cats travel toFayetteville, Ark., to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. The doubleheader willbegin at 1 p.m. (EST).
