The University of Kentucky softball team remained winless as the FIU Diamond Fun & Sun Classic continued today, Feb. 5, in Miami, Fla. The Wildcats (0-4) fell to Illinois State (2-1) by a final score of 4-2 and then dropped a five-inning, 9-1, decision to the Auburn Tigers (2-1).

In their first game of the afternoon, the Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the first with two runs on a pair of hits off starter Kristi Warneke. The freshman pitcher regrouped and stranded two baserunners when she retired Lauren Bierswirth who looked at strike three.

The Wildcats knotted the game at two in the third inning as the belted out four hits including RBI singles by Jessica Nance and Alli Eckman. Warneke (0-1) took the loss in the opener.

ISU reclaimed the lead in the home half of the third when Dominique Borba scored on the Redbirds? third single of the inning off the bat of Stacy Birk. The Redbirds added their fourth and final run in the bottom of the sixth when Randi Patton scored on a sacrifice fly off reliever Samantha Allen.

Designated player Emily Marks collected two of UK?s five hits against ISU. Catcher Callie Kovacs added a single and scored a run.

The Cats dropped a 9-1 contest to Southeastern Conference foe Auburn in the second game of the afternoon. UK continued to struggle defensively, as they committed six errors and managed just two hits on the day. Shortstop Amber Janneck had a hit and an RBI to score Nance in the top of the first to account for Kentucky?s only run of the game. Megan Cooper (0-2), who had the Cats? second hit of the game, took the loss for UK.

The Wildcats continue Sunday, Feb. 6, as the tournament wraps up with a single-elimination format. UK will face the #4 seed, which is still to be determined, at 9 a.m.
