Raleigh, N.C. – The University of Kentucky softball team fell in thequarterfinals of the UNC Triangle Classic on Sunday after falling to theFlames of No. 24 Illinois-Chicago by a score of 8-0.
IUC jumped out on top in the first inning, 5-0, on a pair of homeruns byJulie Bumgardner and Gina Arnold. Samantha Iuli recorded 11 strikeouts inthe game as the Wildcats managed only five hits and left seven runners onbase.
Angie Dal Pozzo led off the Wildcat fourth with a lead-off triple, but UKcould not push her across. Iuli struck out the next three batters tostrand Dal Pozzo and keep the shutout in tact. Tiffany Kruse provided abright spot for the Wildcats with her two hits on the day, pushing heraverage to a team-high .515.
Kentucky continues action next weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Atlanta,Ga., for the Georgia State Invitational Tournament. UK opens thetournament against St. Louis on Saturday.
