RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Kentucky softball team won a pair of close games at the North Carolina Triangle Classic on Friday. In UK’s first game, the Wildcats faced Illinois-Chicago, coming away with a 1-0 victory. With runners on first and second and two outs in the fourth inning, first baseman Lorie Horner singled to score Lindsay Houser from second for what would prove to be the game-winning run. UIC appeared poised to score in the third, as the Flames loaded the bases with no outs. After a pop up to UK shortstop Michelle Bucci got one out, UIC’s Stefanie Christoferson flied out to Leslie Kwiatkowski who then gunned the runner trying to score from third for an inning-ending double play. Horner led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Keary Camunas scattered three hits over seven innings for the win. Camunas also struck out the Flame’s last batter to end the game. The Wildcats needed an extra inning to take care of Radford in UK’s second game, posting a 2-1 win in eight innings. Freshman Stephanie Thompson singled in Tiffany Kruse in the top of the eighth for the game-winning run. UK jumped on the board early, scoring in the first inning when Kruse crossed the plate after a wild pitch. Radford answered in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. After UK took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth, Radford tried to even the score again. The Highlander’s Laura Jewett began the inning on second due to the tie-break rule and advanced to third when Sara Ogilvie reached on a fielder’s choice. However, Ogilvie tried to move to second on the play and was thrown out. Camunas then struck out the last two Radford batters to end the game and give UK’s its second straight win.
