UK Women’s Tennis Picks Up Seven Wins at Vanderbilt Invitational
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team competed in its first invitational of the fall season this past weekend, earning seven wins during the three-day Vanderbilt Invitational at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
“We played against strong competition this weekend. It was great to gain awareness of our current competitive level and the steps necessary for our ideal performance during the remainder of our season,” said head coach Carlos Drada. “We are now looking forward to a great practice week and a great regional tournament.”
The first Wildcat victory came from the duo of Fiona Arrese and Lidia Gonzalez who defeated No. 9 Anna Ross and Holly Staff of Vanderbilt, 7-6, on the opening day. The pair later bested Josie Frazier and Kate Duong of Illinois, 6-4, on Sunday, while Florencia Urrutia and Carlota Molina did the same with the Fighting Illini’s Ashley Yeah and Megan Heuser, 6-4.
Gonzalez picked up an individual victory in her Kentucky debut, taking down ISU’s Christin Hseih, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. A trio of Wildcats in Arrese, Carla Girbau, and Maialen Morante also posted wins in singles play against Illinois.
