Cervantes, Lacatena Off To Strong Starts at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

by Chris Shoals

TOKYO, Japan – Kentucky Softball’s Brittany Cervantes and Alexia Lacatena are both off to strong starts at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Cervantes, representing Team Mexico and Lacatena, pitching for Team Italy both have played two games with Friday serving as the first off day of the softball competition to allow the Opening Ceremonies to take place.

In Tuesday night’s opening games, Lacatena pitched two scoreless innings against Team USA, as she also struck out a batter with the bases loaded and two outs after inheriting a two-on, no-out jam in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lacatena will be a freshman for Kentucky in 2022, hailing from New Jersey.

Cervantes roped a lead-off double to left field in the top of the second inning in her first-career Olympic at-bat overnight as she was Team Mexico’s first base runner of the game. Cervantes was also the starting catcher for Mexico and went 1-for-3 in the game as gold-medal contenders Japan won 3-2 in eight innings.

Pool play picks up on Saturday morning at 1:30 a.m. ET on NBCSN for Cervantes as Mexico faces the United States. Lacatena and Italy will face hosts Japan at 7 a.m. ET on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com on Saturday morning.
