No. 13 Kentucky Softball Set For 2021 Opening Day in Homewood

by Chris Shoals

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – After a 337-day wait, the No. 13 Kentucky Softball team is set for Opening Day of the 2021 season, set to take place this Friday in Homewood, Alabama in the first of a three-game series at Samford spanning two days.

Game one of the series Friday will start at 5 p.m. ET with games two and three consisting of a doubleheader on Saturday commencing at 2 p.m. ET. All three games will be at the Samford Softball Field and host limited fans due to COVID-19 protocols.

Additionally, all three games will be shown live on ESPN+, the digital for-pay streaming outlet of ESPN. Subscription information can be found by visiting Plus.ESPN.com. Fans can follow @UKSoftball on Twitter and Instagram as well as Kentucky Softball on Instagram for the most up-to-date stats, recaps, scheduling changes and more on the weekend.

The No. 13 Wildcats will look to match their perfect opening weekend from 2020, when UK went 4-0 to start off the season – the best opening weekend effort in over five years. UK has not had back-to-back undefeated opening weekends in program history.

Kentucky ended the 2020 season with a 20-4 record, and had just finished up its first scheduled Southeastern Conference series of the year with a 2-1 win over Texas A&M before the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately shut down the remainder of the season. Included in the 2020 season was one meeting with Samford, in which Kentucky won, 7-4. The Wildcats played five games at the 2020 Samford Invitational, winning four of the five including the Friday victory over the Bulldogs.

UK is 3-0 all-time against Samford in program history with the team’s first meeting coming in 2002.
