Alex Goff on Haskins Award Watch List

by Deb Moore

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a spectacular fall season, Kentucky sophomore Alex Goff is among 20 players on the Fred Haskins Award watch list which is awarded to the nation’s best golfer each season.

In a list comprising 20 of the nation’s best golfers, Goff is one of four players from the Southeastern Conference represented. All 14 SEC squads appeared in the same three fall events due to regulations presented by the league office during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goff appeared in all three events for the Wildcats. The Kings Mountain, North Carolina, native captured a win in dramatic fashion at The Blessings Collegiate Invitational to open the season. Goff then earned a third-place finish at the Legends Collegiate Invitational. In nine rounds of action this fall, Goff produced five under-par scores.

He was the only SEC player to finish in the top three of the first two events of the season.

To begin the season, Goff won the Blessings and set career bests in every category. He had a career-low round of 65 during the second day of play and his combined total of 210 was four shots better than his previous low. The win was the first of his career.

Although he didn’t earn another win at the Legends, he put pressure on the field and produced even better numbers. He turned in a combined 201 scorecard to match Chip McDaniel for the second-lowest tournament score in the Brian Craig era. His second round 64 tied Cullan Brown and Jordan Blann for the lowest under Craig.

Goff concluded the fall slate with a 69.78 scoring average. All nine rounds he played counted towards the team score. Five of his nine rounds were sub-70 scores.
In its 50th year, the Fred Haskins Award has been awarded to players who have captured 31 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments around the world. Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw and Justin Thomas.

The Fred Haskins Award is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf SID’s and select golf media. Golf Channel and Golfweek are media partners for the Fred Haskins Award.
