No. 13/14 Kentucky Travels to Marshall For Wednesday Midweek
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Looking to extend its season-high 11-game winning streak, the No. 13/14 Kentucky softball team will travel to Huntington, W. Va., on Wednesday afternoon for a midweek affair with the Marshall Thundering Herd. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. ET at Dot Hicks Field.
The game will be broadcasted on the Marshall Softball Facebook page, as well as can be heard on local radio station WMUL, 88.1 FM. Live stats will be available on HerdZone.com.
Wednesday marks UK’s first trip to Huntington since the 2016 season, when the Wildcats won 1-0 on a solo HR off the bat of Christian Stokes in the top of the fifth inning, scoring the game’s only run. 2016 was also the last time that UK and Marshall have met, as the 2017 meeting was washed out due to weather. Marshall was sent to the 2017 NCAA Lexington Regional, but UK and Marshall never faced each other in the tournament.
Kentucky is flying high at the moment, having ascended to No. 13/14 in the two major national polls on Tuesday morning. It marks the highest that Kentucky has been ranked this season by both the NFCA/USA Today poll and the USA Softball/ESPN top-25.
The Wildcats are now sitting at 20-7 overall on the season, having won 11 games in a row, just two shy of tying the program record set back in 2017. Kentucky is 6-0 in Southeastern Conference play, sitting alone atop the league standings through the opening two weekends of SEC action.
Offensively, UK has been setting all sorts of record, including Abbey Cheek – who now sits just one home run away from tying Brittany Cervantes as the all-time home run leader in UK softball history with 48 in her career. Kayla Kowalik has played well as of late for UK, having hit .500 last week alone in UK’s five games played.
In the circle, Autumn Humes has taken control, only allowing one run in her past 19.2 innings in the circle against South Carolina and Mississippi State – two of the most potent offensive teams in the nation. Meghan Schorman pitched 4.0 innings in UK’s 9-8 comeback win over MSU on Saturday afternoon to earn her second SEC win on the season in her first two SEC appearances in the circle.
