Prince’s Stellar Outing Evens Series in Nail-biting Win at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. – Thanks to a Breanne Ray two-out RBI single up the middle in the top of the sixth inning, and a complete-game shutout from pitcher Meagan Prince, the No. 16 Kentucky softball team evened the series with a 1-0 win at No. 24 Ole Miss on Saturday. 

The complete game was Prince’s seventh of the season, with Saturday coming as her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. 

The rubber game of the three-game set will be on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET and shown live on the SEC Network, ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app with Trey Bender (pxp) and Leigh Dakich (color) on the call. 

With Saturday’s result – Kentucky improves to 24-7 overall and moves back to two games above .500 in the Southeastern Conference with a 5-3 league record. Ole Miss drops to 23-11 overall and 1-7 in SEC play. 

Zero. The shutout is Prince’s fourth of the season, and the Kentucky pitching staff’s eighth of the season. 

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning – Prince got a hard-hit, high-chopper back to the circle and threw on to first to end the game with the tying and go-ahead run left stranded in scoring position. 

Erin Rethlake was the key player in the game, getting on base with a walk in the top of the sixth inning – and coming around to score the game-winning run on Breanne Ray’s RBI single. 

In the top of the sixth inning – Erin Rethlake walked with one out and advanced to second when Abbey Cheek reached on a fielding error by the Rebel shortstop. She then came around to score with two outs on Breanne Ray’s single up the middle. FINAL – No. 16 Kentucky 1, No. 24 Ole Miss 0
