LEXINGTON, Ky. – Fresh off of a three-game sweep of Mississippi State last weekend, the No. 23/24 Kentucky softball team remains home for a series with No. 5/5 Florida beginning Friday, April 1. First pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m. ET, an hour earlier than the originally announced schedule.
Kentucky was led at the plate by senior Megan Yocke who batted .556 for the weekend and led an offensive charge by the Blue and White. In the opening game of the series, UK had four players go yard to eclipse the single-game high for homers in a game.
In the second game, the story was junior ace Chanda Bell. The Indianapolis native charted the first no-hitter in SEC action in school history in a dominating 8-0 win. Bell struck out 11 in that contest to run her career total to 29 games with 10 or more strikeouts in a single outing.
To cap off the sweep, senior Samantha DeMartine homered and UK earned a terrific pitching performance from freshman Ellen Weaver who limited the Bulldogs to just one hit on the afternoon in a 5-0 victory.
The Wildcats currently own an 8-3 mark in league play which is tops in the SEC East along with Georgia. Florida sits just behind with a 7-3 record. Florida suffered a sweep at the hands of the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs a week ago. Prior to that Florida had only dropped one game this season in a 1-0 loss to No. 16 Nebraska.
The Gators enter the weekend with a 30-4 overall record and a 7-3 mark in SEC action. Florida has lost just three SEC games – all coming in a sweep by No. 2 Georgia last weekend.
Florida is a balanced squad that excels in all three phases of the game. The Gators own a .354 batting average as a unit, a .970 fielding clip and an SEC-leading 1.64 ERA.
Michelle Moultrie leads the top of the order with a .460 batting average and a team-best .541 on-base percentage. Megan Bush has knocked in 16 homers and 57 RBI on a .453 batting clip. Four starters own a .400 percentage or higher with three more owning an above .300 mark.
In the circle, Stephanie Brombacher leads a group of four pitchers. Brombacher owns a 0.67 ERA and a perfect 14-0 record. She has struck out 88 batters and walked just 17. Freshman Hannah Rogers has been equally impressive with a 0.74 ERA, a 16-2 record and 81 strikeouts tossed.
Florida leads the overall series with the Blue and White by a 39-7 record. UK did steal a 5-3 game two from the Gators a season ago in Gainesville, Fla. Rachel Riley had a terrific performance in the circle and the UK offense was alive registering 10 hits and handing Florida pitcher Ensley Gammel her first lost of the season. Kentucky had tremendous success in the middle of the order as five players registered two hits apiece. Leading the charge was Meagan Aull who was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Kara Dill was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
