LEXINGTON, Ky. — The No. 23/24 Kentucky softball team will take a break from Southeastern Conference action and face Louisville in the first of two meetings this season between the instate rivals. UK will travel to Louisville for a 6 p.m. ET first pitch on Wed., March 23. The teams will also meet on April 20 in Lexington to complete the home-and-home series.
Kentucky endured a tough road trip a week ago in league action and returned with a 3-2 record. Freshman pitcher Ellen Weaver led a terrific all-around performance for UK in the opening win over LSU on March 18. Weaver went the distance in the circle and limited the Tigers to just one run while striking out nine. Senior Megan Yocke and junior Brittany Cervantes homered in the win and senior Samantha DeMartine matched a career high with three hits.
UK has been led at the plate by senior Meagan Aull who is leading the squad with a .402 clip. Aull has recorded a hit in nine straight games to set a new career high in that category. Sophomore Kara Dill has also been terrific with a .371 batting average, a team-high five sacrifice hits and nine stolen bases.
Louisville enters the midweek game with Kentucky holding an 18-9 overall record. The Cardinals have won five of its last six outings including a five-inning convincing victory over Ohio State to wrap-up play at the San Diego Classic last weekend.
The Cardinals are paced at the plate by Jordan Trimble who is batting .414 in 14 starts. Chelsea Bemis has made all 27 starts for Louisville and sports a .394 average to go along with a team-high four homers. The offensive unit for Louisville is striking at an impressive .318 clip with 15 home runs on the season. Louisville has swiped 29 bags and has charted 19 sacrifice hits to aid the small-ball effort.
In the circle, the Cardinals are led by the reigning Big East Pitcher of the Week in Tori Collins who owns a team-best 2.45 ERA and 108 strikeouts. Louisville has a three-member pitching rotation and as a unit the trio claims a 2.89 ERA and have limited opposing batters to a .228 average.
Louisville leads the overall series with the Blue and White by a mere 13-12 margin. The Cardinals have captured the last seven meetings between the two squads to overtake the series. UK last captured a win on March 7, 2007 at the UK Softball Complex.
