LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind a tremendous pitching effort from Chanda Bell and a three-run home run off the bat of Brittany Cervantes the Kentucky softball team earned a 3-0 victory over visiting Morehead State Thursday afternoon.
Kentucky improves to 17-9 on the season while Morehead State drops to 7-11. This marks the fifth consecutive victory for the Wildcats over their instate rivals.
Bell earned her 10th victory of the season and her third shutout of the year. The right-hander twirled a complete game effort and struck out 12 on the afternoon.
Cervantes’ provided the game’s only offense in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior Natalie Smith reached on a single through the right side and a throwing error by the Eagles enabled junior Megan Yocke to place a second runner on base. Cervantes drilled a shot in deep right-center to plate all three scores and give the Wildcats the 3-0 victory.
Bell limited Morehead State to just three hits on the afternoon and the Eagles totaled just four base runners all game.
Kentucky returns to action on Saturday when it returns to Southeastern Conference action. The Wildcats will host Arkansas in a three-game series this weekend at the UK Softball Complex. Saturday the teams will squad off for a pair of games beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET. Sunday, the squads will complete the series with a single outing with the same start time.
