KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeastern Conference announced the bracketing of this week’s upcoming softball tournament and Kentucky will face Georgia in the opening round game at 11 a.m. ET.
The sixth-seeded Kentucky Wildcats will appear in the conference tournament for the third time in school history and first since 2001. They drew the third-seeded Georgia Bulldogs in the opening game.
The tournament is played over a three-day span in a single-elimination format. Tennessee will play host to this year’s tournament at Sherri Parker Lee Softball Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. Thursday’s opening day will have four games, followed by the advancing winners playing on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET. The SEC Champion will be decided Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET. The Championship game will be televised live by Fox Sports South.
Kentucky (31-20, 13-14) had a year to remember in its season-long goal to compete in post-season action. The Wildcats eclipsed the 30-win plateau for just the second time in school allure and first since winning a share of the SEC East crown in 2000.
Second-year head coach Rachel Lawson orchestrated the biggest turn-around in school history and in the SEC this season. After winning just 17 games overall a season-ago Kentucky put together 31 wins this season for a 14-game turnaround. They also went from winning three games in league action a season ago to increasing that win total by 10 this season. No other SEC team improved by more than four games this season in league play.
