LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky softball team will return to action Wednesday, as they travel to Ohio State for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
Kentucky returns to non-conference play having played 10 consecutive Southeastern Conference games. The last non-conference opponent the Wildcats faced was Indiana on April 1. The doubleheader with Ohio State marks the final non-conference game on the road for the Blue and White of the 2008 campaign.
Six Wildcats have made 40 or more starts this season including seniors Ashley Dimkich and Audrey Meyer, sophomores Molly Johnson and Natalie Smith and freshmen Meagan Aull and Megan Yocke.
Smith and Johnson lead the offensive side of the ball, as both are batting over .370 on the season. The duo has combined for more than 100 hits, seven home runs, three triples, 22 doubles and 18 stolen bases. Yocke and Aull have come on strong as of late in their first seasons as collegiate players. Both first year players have amassed over 30 hits and 20 scores. The tandem has also brought in a combined 29 runs batted in.
Dimkich has been steady on the field in her first base position. She paces the starters with a .980 fielding percentage and has recently risen into the ranks of the all-time records at UK. Dimkich has recorded 230 putouts on the season bringing her career total to 455 through four years. Dimkich?s total ranks eighth all-time at Kentucky.
The Wildcats travel to face an Ohio State team that holds a 25-16 overall record on the season. The Buckeyes got off to a great start and were consistently in the top-25 polls, but a 4-8 conference mark has them struggling of late. Ohio State is led by Sam Marder who is batting .466 on the year and leads the team with 12 home runs.
