LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky softball team?s doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday against Toledo has been canceled and moved to Sunday with a start time of 12:00 p.m., due to weather conditions in Lexington.
Sunday?s doubleheader will mark the home opener for the Kentucky Wildcats (3-7, 0-0). The Wildcats took third place at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu Sunday, with a 4-1 decision over Central Florida. Molly Johnson and Becky Bishop each hit a two-run home run to help guide the Blue and White. Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Young earned her first win of the young season, as she made her first start of her second campaign.
Leading the Wildcats is sophomore Molly Johnson who is batting .419 with six RBI and five extra base hits. Freshman Megan Yocke is hitting .313 from her lead-off position and has started every game at catcher. Sophomore pitcher Amber Matousek has made five appearances from the circle and leads the team with 24 strikeouts.
Earlier this week sophomore Natalie Smith was named to the preseason All-SEC second team, as voted on by the league coaches. Smith and Johnson were All-SEC Freshman team performers a year ago.
Kentucky and Toledo were slated to play a three-game series this weekend with two games Saturday and a third to be played Sunday. This marks the first time in school history the two teams will meet on the softball field.
