HONOLULU, Hawaii ? The University of Kentucky softball team will take part in a four-team field at the Paradise Classic hosted by the University of Hawai?i, Feb. 14-17 in Honolulu.
Kentucky (2-2, 0-0) is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Chattanooga Shootout where they began their third consecutive season with an opening day victory. Sophomore pitcher Amber Matousek threw 10 strikeouts in the team?s opening day win to lead the way over Wichita State. Her 10 strikeouts were the most for a UK pitcher since Keary Camunas tossed 13 against Florida in 1999.
Sophomore Molly Johnson led the bats as she finished the weekend hitting .600. The sophomore from Arizona had three extra base hits, nine total hits, five runs and three RBI in the opening weekend. Fellow sophomore Destinee Mordecai belted the first home run of the season for the Wildcats in their loss to Chattanooga on Sunday. Kentucky?s lineup featured four freshmen and four sophomores in the starting rotation.
Head Coach Rachel Lawson became the first coach in school history to begin her tenure with a win, when the Wildcats took the 6-2 win over Wichita State.
This week?s trip to Hawai?i marks the first such trip in school history. Kentucky will meet two first time opponents in Hawai?i and Central Florida. UK will square off with #15/16 Hawai?i on Feb. 14, in the 6 p.m. tilt. The Wildcats will then face Long Beach State at 1 p.m. and Central Florida at 3 p.m. on Friday. After every team has played against each other, the teams will be seeded and bracket play will follow on Saturday and Sunday.
