University of Kentucky softball player Molly Johnson has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced today. This is the first such honor for Johnson and the first for any Wildcat since Jessica Trueblood won the same award last season.
Johnson helped the Cats to a 4-1 record this weekend with a team-high .563 average while extending her hitting streak to six games. The freshman third baseman had two or more hits in her last four games to bring her team-leading total of multiple-hit games to nine. She also had two multiple-RBI games, giving her six for the season.
Johnson posted a slugging percentage of 1.313 while scoring seven runs during the five-game span. She was 1-for-2 with a homerun in the first win over Butler and added a 2-for-4 performance with a double and a homerun in the second game against the Bulldogs. She went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and scored twice in the third matchup against Butler before going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple in the loss to Evansville. Johnson doubled for the fourth straight game when she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the win over IUPUI.
Johnson leads the team with 24 hits and is second on the team with a .511 batting average and six doubles. She is also second on the team with 18 RBI and four stolen bases.
The Wildcats return to action this Wednesday, Mar. 7, when they host Louisville in a single game. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex.
