The University of Kentucky softball team wrapped up its fall season with an intra-squad scrimmage this weekend. The ?Black and Blue Series? featured three teams ? black, blue, white ? with six innings played on Friday afternoon. The Black team won the two-day series.

Pitcher Samantha Allen faced 15 batters and allowed two hits while striking out three. The junior hit one batter but did not allow a run to score. Jennifer Young also threw a shutout, giving up just two hits to the 14 batters she faced. Junior Lindsay Brogdon allowed three runs on six hits and faced 18 batters.

Infielder Natalie Smith went 3-for-6 with two doubles, while junior Alli Eckman was 2-for-3 with a double, a sacrifice and was hit by a pitch. Senior Ashley Fertic added a 1-for-3 plate performance, while sophomore Elizabeth Fadde had a double.

?Our offense was good during the Friday game and our Baserunning was excellent,? said third-year head coach Eileen Schmidt. ?Sam Allen and Jennifer Young had good outings. Brogdon did not have very good luck and our defense seemed to be a step behind.?

On Saturday, Brogdon was impressive in the circle. The Birmingham, Ala., native didn?t allow a run and faced 16 batters, giving up four hits and striking out a pair. Allen gave up two hits and walked one of the 14 batters she faced, while Young allowed two runs on five hits with 16 batters faced.

Senior Brooke Marnitz shined at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Senior Katie Campbell and Fertic each added a hit, while Audrey Meyer went 1-for-3 at the dish.

?Offensively, we were very aggressive and looked great today,? said Schmidt. ?In the circle, Brogdon really stepped up with a great next day comeback. Sam was steady as usual and Jennifer lost her focus a bit in the last inning but did ok for us on the mound.?

?The baserunning was good for the second straight day and I thought our defense was excellent,? added Schmidt. ?We made some big plays and had a spring in our step and the pace was good. We will go back into individual/group workouts at the end of next week and continue to work with Coach Tracey-Simmons in the weight room.?

The Wildcats open the 2007 regular season Feb. 9 at the Baylor Tournament in Waco, Texas.
