HOUSTON, Texas ? The University of Kentucky softball team was winless in the first day of play at the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas. The Wildcats lost to No. 11 Baylor (14-1) by a score of 3-0, before falling to tournament host Houston (3-6) in five innings in the nightcap by a score of 10-0.
In the opener, BU got on the board with a run on a single and a UK error in the first to take the early lead. The Bears plated two more runs in the home half of the second on a pair of RBI singles.
Freshman starter Samantha Allen retired the side in order over the next three innings as the Cats turned two double plays to hold the 11th-ranked Bears to just three runs on four hits. Allen moved to 1-5 on the year and struck out a career-high five batters.
Second baseman Gina Florence collected all the hits for UK, going 2-for-2 with a pair of base hits.
In the second game of the double dip, the Cats fell behind early as Houston went on top 9-0 after scoring seven runs in the third. A single run in the fourth gave the Cougars a 10-run lead.
Jessica Nance and Meghan Cooper each had a single in the game, while Amber Janneck?s doubled to right-center field in the fourth for the Cats? third hit of the night. The Wildcats were unable to push a run across, however, and the game ended after five innings due to the run rule
On Saturday, Feb. 19, Kentucky faces Texas State at 2 PM, followed by a 4 PM contest against North Carolina. Play wraps up Sunday with a 10 AM game against Minnesota. This marks the first meeting between the two schools.
