The Kentucky Wildcat softball team fell to 0-7 on the year today at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. UK dropped its first game to No. 21 Long Beach State (5-1) by a final score of 5-0. The Cats then lost a 4-3 decision to San Diego State (7-0).

In the opening game, Long Beach got on the board first with a two-run homer to left field off the bat of Lauren Johnson in the top of the third. Freshman starter Samantha Allen rebounded and got out of the inning. She gave up just three hits over the next three innings and stranded four. The 49ers added a three-spot in the sixth as they scored three runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Cats suffered their second shutout of the season with the loss to LBSU.

UK had three hits by leadoff hitter Jessica Nance, Meghan Cooper and Megan Glenn. Allen (0-3) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Kristi Warneke tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up an earned run on two hits.

Kentucky took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Glenn belted a double to right-center field to lead off the frame. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Campbell and scored on Emily Marks? infield single.

The Cats added a pair of runs in the third as shortstop Amber Janneck recorded her first home run of the year after leading UK with a record-setting 12 bombs in 2004. The two-run shot sailed over the left field wall to score Cooper who had singled earlier in the inning.

The Aztecs made it 3-1 in the fourth on a solo home run by Taryin Casillas.

SDSU claimed the 4-3 lead in the home half of the sixth, scoring three times on four hits, including the Aztecs? second solo home run of the day. Cooper relieved starter Warneke and got out of the inning by striking out a pair of batters.

The Cats threatened in the final inning as Ashley Fertic singled with one out and moved to second on an error by the shortstop. That was as far as she would advance, however, as the Aztecs went on to take the 4-3 win.

Cooper went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored against SDSU, while Fertic also collected a pair of hits. Glenn added a double, and scored a run in the loss.

Cooper (0-3) took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in an inning of work. She struck out three on the day.

The Cats return to action Saturday, Feb. 12, as they face #6 Stanford at 6 p.m. and Cal-Poly in the nightcap at 8 p.m. The Wildcats wrap up play with a Sunday contest against the DePaul Blue Demons at noon.
