Amber Janneck was named to the All-SEC Freshman team, league officials announced Thursday. Janneck is the first person in the eight-year history of the UK Softball program to be named to the freshman squad and only the 10th person to garner All-SEC honors.
Janneck, a Florence, Ky., native, finished the 2004 season tied for first in the Southeastern Conference with 12 home runs, a mark that smashed the previous UK single-season record of eight. She led the Cats in at-bats (172), runs (31), RBIs (34) and slugging percentage (.558). Janneck made notable contributions to the UK as a rookie, as two of her home run blasts this season were walk-off homers. She was also a valuable commodity in the outfield, never committing an error in her starting position in right field.
Teammates Rachel Friberg and Meghan Cooper were also honored this week for their accomplishments on and off the field, being named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. Friberg, a senior, recently ended her four-year career with the Cats in the top 10 in every offensive category in the school?s record books. The Bloomington, Minn., native currently has a 3.455 GPA in Journalism/Sociology. Cooper, a redshirt sophomore, was one of only two players to play and start in every game this season for UK. She recently won a Catspy Award for Female Performance of the Year after picking up the win on the mound and going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two home runs in UK?s first-ever win against Alabama this season. Cooper, who is from Golden, Colo., sports a 3.75 GPA in History.
