The Kentucky softball team split a pair of Southeastern Conference games with the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks Saturday at the UK Softball Complex. The Cats (24-26-1, 6-20 SEC) came from behind in game two for the 8-5 victory. Arkansas broke open a no-hitter from UK hurler Gretchen Prugh with two hits in the eighth inning to record a 1-0 victory in game one.
The Cats went into the third inning of the second game down 3-1, but UK loaded the bases six times in the bottom of the frame and scored five times to take a 6-3 advantage. The Lady Backs (17-36, 5-24 SEC)answered to close the gap in the fifth, as Mindy O?Malley singled and Rachel LeMaster walked to lead off the inning. Both advanced on a sac bunt from Candice Swan, and O?Malley tacked on the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. LeMaster came home shortly thereafter on an RBI double from Shana Easley.
The Cats tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the sixth, as Brooke Marnitz doubled to deep center to bring in Meghan Cooper and scored one play later on an RBI single from Emily Marks. Amy Kendall held onto the lead for the victory, going the distance while scattering only five hits.
UK left four runners on base in scoring position through the first seven innings of game one. The Cats threatened to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Meghan Cooper singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on an error from the UA first baseman. But the Lady Backs stuck out two of UK?s last three batters in the frame to send it to the extra innings.
Prugh was stellar in the game, going the distance while only giving up the two hits in the eighth. The freshman also struck out six.
Heather Schlichtman also tossed a complete game for the victory. She gave up five hits and struck out an impressive 14 batters. Kallie Foglesong, who scored the lone game in the game, went 1-for-2.
The Cats and Lady Backs will face off in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. Seniors Rachel Friberg and Crystalie Wolfe will be honored before start of the game.
