The Kentucky softball team will take a break from Southeastern Conference action this Wednesday, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a doubleheader. The Cats are 5-1 this season against intrastate rival schools, including taking decisive 10-0 and 7-2 wins over Morehead State last week in Morehead.
UK (21-23-1) dropped all three games in a series with No. 4 LSU last weekend. The Cats are led by Rachel Friberg, who is hitting .333 with a team-leading 44 hits. UK?s Amber Janneck, who hit her 11th home run of the season Saturday vs. the Tigers, is currently ranked second in the conference in overall home runs and is first in the SEC in homers in league play with six.
The Toppers (23-14) got their first win in the Sun Belt Conference over the weekend off a walk-off home run from senior Allison Silver, snapping WKU?s six-game losing streak. Silver leads the squad with a 13-7 record on the mound and a 1.83 ERA in 111.0 innings pitched.
UK is 2-4 all-time vs. WKU. The Cats spilt games with the Toppers last season in Lexington.
