Gainesville, Fla. ? The Kentucky softball team upset No. 21 Florida 4-0 Sunday for their first Southeastern Conference win of the season at the UF Softball Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. The win snaps a six-game losing streak to the Gators which dates back to March 12, 2002.

UK (12-5-1, 1-2 SEC) scored two in the second inning, as sophomore Amy Kendall got the Cats started with a single to left field. Pinch runner Crystalie Wolfe advanced on two consecutive UF errors, and Brooke Marnitz hit an RBI single to put the Cats up 1-0 early. Emily Marks gave UK a two-run advantage with a sacrifice fly to center one batter later. UK tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh, as Kendall reached base for the third time in the game on a walk, and Brooke Marnitz advanced her to third on a double to right field. Lori Melchi pounded out her first hit of the series with one out in the frame that brought in Kendall for a 3-0 Kentucky lead after six. Amber Janneck singled and scored in the seventh for the final 4-0 score.

The Gators (19-3, 2-1 SEC) left seven runners on base through seven innings. The Cats had several impressive defensive plays in the game, including a double play to end the sixth. Jenny Gladding reached base on a walk with one out in the inning, and Jenilee Garner lined to Melchi in left field, who made the throw back to first in time to catch Gladding for the double play.

Four Kentucky pitchers combined to shutout the Gators, as Meghan Cooper (5-1) earned the win on the mound in 21. innings on the mound. UK pounded out eight hits in the game compared to UF?s five, as Janneck, Kendall and Marnitz each tacked on two hits for the Cats.

The Cats return to SEC action on Tuesday, March 9, when they play host to the Volunteers of Tennessee for a mid-week series at the UK Softball Complex.
