The University of Kentucky softball team (12-38) rode into Louisville having never lost at Ulmer Field (4-0). They left with that streak intact as they shutout the Cardinals (19-20) 2-0 and 3-0 Wednesday. Amy Kendall and Crystalie Wolfe each gave up four hits in the wins.
Game 1 – Kentucky 2, Louisville 0
Game one was a pitcher’s duel until Kentucky scored first in the top of the fourth. Nikki Jones led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lori Melchi. After Lyndsey Angus reached on her team-leading 25th walk of the season, Rachel Friberg singled up the middle, scoring Jones and giving the Cats the 1-0 lead.
Kentucky added to the lead in the sixth. With one out, Angus and Friberg had back-to-back singles. Amy Kendall came up and put down a bunt, catching the Cardinal defenders back on their heels. The infield hit loaded the bases. Jessica Nance then hit a slow roller to second base giving Angus plenty of time to score. A ground-out ended the inning with UK up 2-0.
Kendall pitched arguably her best game of the season, giving up only two hits through six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Louisville attempted to mount a comeback. Aja Sherman and Lisa Estes each singled to left field putting two runners aboard with two outs. Lacy Wood then grounded out to the shortstop, ending the inning and giving Kentucky the 2-0 win.It was Kendall’s eighth win and second shutout of the season. She also earned the victory in a 10-0 win over Morehead March 12.
Game 2 – Kentucky 3, Louisville 0
The Cats struck first in game two. Nikki Jones, who was held hitless in the first game, led off with a bunt single. Lori Melchi put down a sacrifice bunt but an errant throw allowed her to reach first safely. Angus extended her hitting streak to a career-high tying 9-games with a single to right field. The bases-were loaded for Rachel Friberg, who got her third hit of a day, scoring Jones and Melchi with a single up the middle.
Kentucky took the 2-0 lead into the third, when they would add another. Jessica Nance punched a single into right field and advanced to second on a Megan Glenn ground out. With Megan Brooks up to bat, Nance added to her team-leading stolen bases total with her 13th of the season. The throw from the catcher went wide and into left field, allowing Nance to trot home, giving the Cats the 3-0 lead.
The Cats’ Crystalie Wolfe gave up hits in each of the first four innings but held the Cards hitless in the final three innings for her first career win.
The Cats will once again be on the road this weekend as they travel to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Lady Backs in the last SEC series of the season.
