The University of Kentucky softball team (9-31, 1-19) will travel to Baton Rouge, La., and will look to upset the No. 11 LSU Tigers, April 12-13. The Tigers, who were the preseason pick to win the SEC, are 30-11 overall and 8-6 in the conference. The doubleheader on Saturday as well as the series finale on Sunday will begin at noon ET. The Cats are coming off a doubleheader sweep by Tennessee, increasing their losing streak to a school-record 18 games. The Tigers come into the series with a four-game winning streak. Most recently, they defeated Nichols State, 2-0.
The Tigers are led offensively by junior Sara Fitzgerald who is sporting a .302 batting average. In the pitcher’s circle, junior Kristin Schmidt and sophomore Tessa Lynam anchor the pitching attack. Schmidt comes in with a 18-9 record and a miniscule 0.92 ERA while Lynam is 12-2 on the season with a 2.01 ERA.
LSU is coached by Yvette Girauard who is in her third year at the helm of the Tigers program. Prior to taking over at LSU, she spent 20 years at Southwestern Louisiana. In her 22 years, she is 904-283. At LSU, she has amassed a 145-33 record.
Kentucky has never won against LSU, going 0-12. The Tigers swept the series last year in Lexington.
Following the LSU series, the Wildcats will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a midweek doubleheader with the Hoosiers, April 16.
