The University of Kentucky softball team fell to 6-13 on the season and 0-3 in the SEC after a third-straight loss to SEC opponent Floirda. Junior Rachel Friberg’s bases-loaded double put the Cats up 3-0 but nine runs in the last four innings, including three home runs, gave the Gators (22-9, 5-1) the 9-3 victory.
In Kentucky’s half of the third inning, freshman Megan Glenn led off with a walk. Freshman Lori Melchi came in to pinch-run and was advanced to second on an infield single by senior Nikki Jones. A fielder’s choice by Jessica Nance put runners on first and third with two outs. Senior Lyndsey Angus, second on the team in batting, was intentionally walked to bring up Friberg. On a 2-2 count, Friberg hit a rocket down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving Kentucky a 3 run advantage.
Florida bounced right back. On the first pitch of the next inning, Mylin Prieto hit a home run to right-center field. In the next inning, they added more runs. RBI doubles by Lindsey Cameron and Prieto tied the score at three. Jen Mossadeghi hit her third home run in the last two games to put the Gators up 5-3.
Cameron hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning, her fourth of the weekend, which was part of another four-run inning for UF. Three-up and three-down fifth, sixth and seventh innings by Kentucky gave Florida the 9-3 win.
UK senior Nikki Jones went 2-3 in the game, extending her hitting streak to nine games and raising her team-high batting average to .361.
Kentucky will step out of SEC play for a doubleheader with Morehead State on Wednesday, March 12. The first game will start at 4 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex. Live Gametracker stats will be available on ukathletics.com.
