Game 2 Box Score

The University of Kentucky softball team fell to SEC opponent Florida in a doubleheader Saturday at the UK Softball Complex. Senior Nikki Jones, who is the career batting average leader at UK, hit her first career home run in the second game.

Florida sprung for five runs in the first inning to begin the first game. A single by Jen Mossadeghi scored Prissie Walden and Lindsey Cameron. After a single by Mandy Schuerman, Gator pitcher Jenny Gladding homered to left-center field to give Florida the five run advantage.

Kentucky was able to get on the board in the sixth when an Ingrid Lochelt double brought in Lyndsey Angus. But that’s all the Wildcats could get as Florida added three in the top of the seventh for the 8-1 win. Gladding struck out a career high 14 batters in the victory.

A scary moment in the top of the first inning of the second game delayed action for 30 minutes. Freshman pitcher Becky Abner was hit in the back of the head by a thrown ball on a pick-off attempt. After lying motionless for several minutes, she was finally wheeled off, conscious, on a stretcher and brought to UK Hospital. A report following the game said she was awaiting X-rays at the hospital.

With only two pitchers in the Kentucky rotation, freshman Amy Kendall, who had just pitched the first game, came in to pitch the rest of the second game.

Florida took advantage of the breeze that was blowing to left field, as they hit five home runs in the game, including two each by Mossadeghi and Cameron.

Senior Nikki Jones, whose .356 average is currently tops in the UK record books, hit her first career home run in the third inning. Jones also extended her hitting streak to eight games. With the eight-run rule in effect, Florida got the 10-2 victory after five innings.

The two teams will square off in the series finale on Sunday at the UK Softball Complex at 1 p.m. ET. Admission is free. Live Gametracker stats will be available on ukathletics.com.
