The University of Kentucky softball team will play host to Ohio State in a doubleheader Wednesday, March 5. The first game between the Wildcats (6-8) and the 18th-ranked Buckeyes (8-6) is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET at the UK Softball Complex. Admission is free.
Kentucky can bring its record back up to .500 with wins over OSU. The Wildcats are 0-5 against ranked opponents this season after falling twice each to No. 14 Stanford and No. 17 Georgia, and once to No. 25 Oregon.
The Cats have had more than a week off since their last game. The UK Invitational, which was scheduled for last weekend, was canceled due to freezing conditions. Seniors Nikki Jones and Lyndsey Angus lead the Cats with .326 and .316 batting averages, respectively. Freshman Amy Kendall’s 1.75 ERA leads the way for Kentucky on the mound.
The Buckeyes are riding a three-game win streak into Lexington. Most recently, they defeated No. 7 Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, at the Worth Invitational. Sophomore outfielder Karisa Evans leads OSU with 14 hits and a .356 average. On the mound, Ohio State is led by senior Katie Chain, who, despite a 3-3 record, has a 1.32 ERA and has struck out 57 batters in only 47 innings.
Ohio State holds a 2-1 series lead over Kentucky. Last year, the teams split a doubleheader in Columbus, Ohio.
The Wildcats are 2-4 all-time in home openers. The last win was in 2001, a 4-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky.
The doubleheader is the final tune-up before the Cats enter Southeastern Conference play on Saturday, March 8, when they play host to Florida.
