The University of Kentucky softball team travels to Miami this weekend to begin its 2003 season at the Fun & Sun Classic. This will be the second consecutive season the Wildcats participate in the tournament hosted by Florida International University. UK will face Illinois State (11 a.m. ET) and Georgia (1:30 p.m. ET) on Friday and will take on host FIU Saturday (1:30 p.m. ET).

Coach Beth Pruitt is beginning her seventh season at the helm of the Wildcat program. She owns a 140-226 record in the Bluegrass.

The Cats return five starters and one pitcher from the 2002 season, which saw them go 24-32 overall, 6-21 in the SEC. Among the returnees are two-time All-SEC performers Lyndsey Angus and Nikki Jones. Sophomore Meghan Cooper is the only returning pitcher from a year ago. She went 12-10 last year and led the team with 163 innings pitched.

Other returning starters include junior Rachel Friberg and sophomores Brook Bowman and Jessica Nance.

After the loss of five seniors, Kentucky brought in a long list of newcomers. Junior college transfers Crystalie Wolfe and Bobbi Darretta look to help fill the void left by departing pitchers Jennifer Howland and Morgan Marr.

The Cats faced Illinois State twice in this same tournament a year ago with each team winning one. They faced FIU for the first time last year, winning 4-2. UK trails the series with Georgia, 7-16.
