Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball team has announced the signing of six players. Katie Campbell, Ashley Fertic, Amber Janneck, Brooke Marnitz, Savannah Mitcham and Jenny Sibert will join the UK program in the fall semester of 2003.
“I am extremely excited about the recruiting class that has committed to the University of Kentucky,” said coach Beth Pruitt, who is entering her seventh season at UK. “This is by far the deepest and most versatile class we’ve signed.”
Janneck, an infielder/outfielder from Florence, Ky., was selected first-team all-state as a junior at Boone Co. High School. She batted .489 with 67 hits, 15 doubles, two home runs and 59 runs scored last season.
Marnitz is a local product from Dunbar High School in Lexington. She has been a fixture in the infield for the Bulldogs since the seventh grade. Last season Marnitz batted .523 with six home runs and 45 RBI. She was voted first-team all-state and the top player in the 11th Region as a junior.
Sibert is a utility player from Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, Ore. She batted .271 with 21 RBI in 2002. She was selected second-team All-Valley League in both softball and basketball last season.
Fertic, an infielder/outfielder from Valrico, Fla., was named to the first-team All-Western Conference as a sophomore and junior at Durant High School. She holds a career .293 batting average, including a .313 clip in 2002. Last season she collected 28 hits and drove in 12 runs. In addition to her softball accomplishments she also is a letterwinner in basketball, golf and cross country.
“Jenny, Amber, Brooke and Ashley are all skilled infielders who can play multiple positions,” Pruitt said.
Mitcham comes to UK from Brush Prairie, Wash., where she batted .304 with seven doubles last season. As a sophomore she was the starting catcher for the Skyview High School team that won the class 3A Washington state championship.
Campbell is an infielder/catcher from Mt. Rainier High School in Des Moines, Wash. As a junior she batted .444 with two home runs and 36 RBI. She banged out 36 hits and scored 21 runs.
“Katie and Savannah are talented catchers who also are capable of helping us at other positions, so they give us a great deal of versatility,” Pruitt said.
The 2003 edition of Kentucky softball opens its season on Friday, Jan. 31, with a trip to the Florida International Tournament, held in Miami, Fla.
