LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball team will have to wait one more day to play the home opener of the 2002 season as play was delayed for five-and-a-half hours due to rain on Saturday, March 9, at the UK Softball Complex, pushing all of the Wildcats’ contests back until Sunday. UK will open the day at 10 a.m. against Ohio, followed by a game with Kent State at noon and finally wrapping up the day at 6 p.m. against Illinois State.

In the first game of the day, Illinois State outlasted Kent State, 1-0, in a game that covered 7 hours, 28 minutes due to three rain delays. ISU’s Audra Rast threw a complete game one-hitter, fanning nine to pick up her fourth win of the season. The Redbirds scored the game’s lone run as first baseman Jamie Bagnall doubled to left center and pinch runner Erin Carr scored on Kate Stake’s triple to center in the bottom of the sixth. ISU improved to 5-8 while KSU is now 4-5.

In the tournament’s second game, Eastern Kentucky got seven solid innings of three-hit ball from Jonelle Csora, who sat down 12 via the strikeout, as the Colonels shut out Ohio Universtiy, 3-0. EKU scored two in the second as centerfielder Kelli Bromley tripled with two outs to plate Amy Herrington and Megan Mills, both of whom had singled to get on base. With the win, EKU improves to 8-5 while Ohio drops to 4-8.

The third and final game of the day scheduled for Eastern Kentucky and Illinois State was called due to the cold temperatures and was not rescheduled for the tournament. Also, Evansville elected to drop out of the tournament due to the poor weather conditions.
