(Mar. 5, 2001) — The University of Kentucky softball team plays host to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads Tuesday, March 6, at the UK Softball Complex. The first game is set for 3 p.m., while the second game is slated for 5 p.m.
“Opening up well in SEC play is important to us,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “We want to generate some momentum in the conference race. We can do that by playing well from the first pitch against Georgia.”
The Wildcats (8-10, 0-0 SEC) have won three of their last four games including a sweep of Eastern Kentucky, 4-3 and 8-0, in a non-conference doubleheader at home last Wednesday. The Bulldogs (18-8, 0-0 SEC) have won five in a row with freshman pitcher Nichole Urban recording all five victories.
Last season the Cats won three of four games from the host Bulldogs to cut Georgia’s lead in the all-time series to 10-6. Sophomore pitcher Morgan Marr shut out the Bulldogs 2-0 in game four of last season’s series. Marr leads the UK hurlers this season with a 5-3 record and a 1.93 ERA. Senior outfielder Leslie Kwiatkowski leads the Cats in hitting with a .339 batting average. Kwiatkowski also leads the team with a slugging percentage of .571.
The Wildcats and Bulldogs will take the field again Wednesday, March 7, for a 3 p.m. contest to close out the three-game series.
