The University of Kentucky softball team will play its home opener in a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the UK Softball Complex.
“We are very anxious to open at home and to play on our home field,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “This week we are going to be focusing on getting our offense in order. We expect EKU will be a good contest.”
The Wildcats (6-10, 0-0 SEC) are coming off an appearance at the Sonic Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn., where they defeated Liberty University twice. Leading Kentucky in batting this season is senior Leslie Kwiatkowski, .300, while freshman Rachel Friberg leads the Cats with 54 putouts. Tiffany Kruse has hammered three home runs this season and leads the team in RBI with 12. In pitching, Morgan Marr continues to lead the squad. Her record is 4-3 and she has an ERA of 2.05, with seven complete games pitched. Marr also has 26 strikeouts on her record.
Eastern Kentucky (6-3, 0-0 OVC) played host to its EKU Invitational last weekend and went 2-1 in its tournament. Elise Burch leads the Colonels with a batting average of .381. Amy Herrington has hit the Lady Colonels only home run this season and leads the team in RBI. Defensively, Ashley Totten tops the list in putouts for the Colonels with 57. Jonelle Csora has pitched the most innings for EKU and has an ERA of 1.35 with 14 strikeouts.
