The University of Kentucky softball team will play host to the Kentucky Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30. The games willbegin at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m..
“Our team is biting at the bit to get out and play outside the school,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “We are pleased to haveGeorgetown and Morehead State coming and we are looking forward to two solid games to culminate our fall season.”
Morehead State University and Georgetown College will square off in the first game. Morehead State was 20-35 overall,10-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. Senior Dana Fohl led the Eagles in runs (30) and hits (57) last season, and had abatting average of .320.
Senior Nola Queen will combine with Fohl to lead this team. Queen had four home runs, 33 RBIs and a batting average of.285 last season. Sophomore pitcher Nikki Scott had an earned run average of 2.38 and two strikeouts in 2000.
Georgetown will be led by sophomore Crissy Papp, who led the team last season in batting average (.407) and on basepercentage (.435), while notching 61 hits, 35 RBIs, and four home runs. Senior Jennifer Lucas will contribute as well, leading in runswith 31 in 2000.
Senior pitcher Toni Combs had an earned run average of 3.16 and struck 30 batters out last season. The Tigers were 20-31-1overall and 10-10 in the Mid-South Conference last year.
The second game will pit Kentucky against Georgetown, while the third game will have Kentucky facing Morehead.
Kentucky had its best season last year since its inception. The squad went 36-29 overall, 15-13 in the SoutheasternConference, and were the SEC Eastern Division champions in 2000.
The Wildcats will be led by senior Leslie Kwiatkowski, who posted a batting average of .398, had 43 runs, 80 hits, and 50RBIs last season. Sophomore Lyndsey Angus will help lead the team. In 2000, Angus recorded 37 runs, 61 hits, 26 RBIs and abatting average of .359.
Junior pitcher Jennifer Howland had an earned run average of 2.30 and netted 30 strikeouts last season.
Kwiatkowski was a first team All-SEC pick last season, while Coach Kirchner was awarded with SEC Coach of the Year.
