COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of Kentucky softball team’s season endedFriday afternoon as the Florida Gators defeated the Cats, 2-0, eliminating UKfrom the 2000 Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament at the South CommonsSoftball Complex.
UK fell into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament onThursday when the Cats fell to the 25th-ranked South Carolina, 2-1.
“I was very pleased with the way we came out ready to play,” UK coachBeth Kirchner said. “I thought we played well defensively for the second gamein a row. Offensively, we just were not able to come through and get our batson the ball. I am extremely proud of our team.”
UF first baseman Emily Marino hit her 14th home run of the season, asolo shot to right center off UK starter Keary Camunas in the fourth inning togive the Gators a 1-0 advantage.
The Gators added another run in the fifth on designated player KortneyEdge’s RBI-single to center field, scoring pinch runner Jenn Brown from secondbase.
UK had a chance in the sixth inning when leadoff batter Beth Foglesingled to short. Fogle advanced to second on a wild pitch by UF hurler ReniseLandry and moved to third when freshman Lyndsey Angus flied out to right field.Junior Leslie Kwiatkowski struck out and Tiffany Kruse ended the inning byflying out to left.
Landry fanned three batters, while improving to 19-11. Camunas walkedtwo and struck out one, closing out the season with a 19-15 record. As UK’s acepitcher all four seasons, Camunas, a senior from Lake Forest, Calif., compileda record of 54-81.
The Cats enjoyed their most successful season in school history,winningthe school’s first SEC Eastern Division Championship and finishing with awinning record for the first time in school history at 36-29.
