Cats finish season with 36-29 record.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (May 12, 2000) — The University of Kentuckysoftball team’s season ended Friday afternoon as theFlorida Gators defeated the Cats, 2-0, eliminating UKfrom the 2000 Southeastern Conference SoftballTournament at the South Commons Softball Complex.

UK fell into the losers bracket of thedouble-elimination tournament on Thursday when theCats fell to the 25th-ranked South Carolina, 2-1.

“I was very pleased with the way we came out readyto play,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “I thought weplayed well defensively for the second game in a row.Offensively, we just were not able to come throughand get our bats on the ball. I am extremely proud ofour team.”

UF first baseman Emily Marino hit her 14th home runof the season, a solo shot to right center off UKstarter Keary Camunas in the fourth inning to give theGators a 1-0 advantage.

The Gators added another run in the fifth ondesignated player Kortney Edge’s RBI-single to centerfield, scoring pinch runner Jenn Brown from secondbase.

UK had a chance in the sixth inning when leadoffbatter Beth Fogle singled to short. Fogle advanced tosecond on a wild pitch by UF hurler Renise Landryand moved to third when freshman Lyndsey Angusflied out to right field. Junior Leslie Kwiatkowski struckout and Tiffany Kruse ended the inning by flying out toleft.

Landry fanned three batters, while improving to 19-11. Camunas walked two andstruck out one, closing out the season with a 19-15 record. As UK’s ace pitcherall four seasons, Camunas, a senior from Lake Forest, Calif., compiled a recordof 54-81.

The Cats enjoyed their most successful season in school history, winning theschool’s first SEC Eastern Division Championship and finishing with a winningrecord for the first time in school history at 36-29.
