OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Kentucky softball team split adoubleheader with the Ole Miss Rebels Friday evening at the Ole Miss SoftballComplex. UK scored a 2-1 victory over the Rebels in the opener, the Cats’ firstwin over the Rebels in school history. UM captured the second game, 3-1.
UK (26-20, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) jumped on the Rebels in the topof the first when freshman Nikki Jones scored on a throwing error by UM pitcherHolly Burris. Jones advanced to third on a bunt by UK catcher Lyndsey Angus,however Burris overthrew first base, allowing Jones to score.
The Cats added another run in the sixth on Leslie Kwiatkowski’sRBI-single to center field, scoring Beth Fogle from third to give UK a 2-0lead.
UM’s Heather Swinney hit a solo shot over the right field fence, herfifth round-tripper of the season, in the bottom of the sixth off UK starterKeary Camunas for the game’s final margin of 2-1.
Camunas improved to 15-10 on the season, setting the UK school mark forwins in a single season. The Lake Forest, Calif., native struck out fivebatters, while UM hurler Holly Burris struck out six batters, dropping herrecord to 10-12.
In the second game, Lindsay Price’s RBI-single scored Mandy Shklar fromsecond, giving the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
UK tied the game in the third inning on Beth Fogle’s run-scoring singleto left field. With the bases loaded and one out, Leslie Kwiatkowski struck outand Tiffany Kruse flied out to second base as the Rebels escaped the jam.
In the bottom of the third, UM (18-33, 5-13 SEC) pushed two runnersacross to take a 3-1 victory as the Rebels held UK scoreless through final fourinnings.
UM pitcher Jennifer Hughes, who struck out a career-high 10 batters,improved to 4-5 on the season, while UK’s Morgan Marr fell to 5-5.
UK returns to action on Saturday, April 14 when the Cats travel toStarkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The doubleheaderwill begin at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
