LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball teamscored a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in eight innings over the hostLouisville Cardinals on Wednesday in the first game of the doubleheaderat Ulmer Field. In the second game,
UL used a two-run blast by Candi Padilla over the left fieldfence to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of theopening game.
UK (23-17) got on the board in the top of the third on centerfielder Jen Howland sacrifice fly to center, scoring Andrea Eilertsonfrom third. Leslie Kwiatkowski struck out looking with the bases loadedto end the inning.
With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Eilertson hit aground ball to UL (24-16) shortstop Val Smith but Smith was unable tobare hand the ball, allowing Lyndsey Angus to score on the error. Angus’run tied the game at 2-2, but with the bases loaded an two out, ColleenBoddy hit into a fielder’s choice and Jamie Dardis was thrown out atsecond, ending the UK threat
Using the international tiebreaker in extra innings, putting thelast out of the previous inning on second base, Kwiatkowski scored fromthird base on Eilertson’s RBI-single to right center. UK held UL runnerShae Dobina at third base with one out as the Cats went on to a 3-2victory.
Eilertson, who had the game-winning RBI for UK, led the Cats atthe plate by going 2-for-3 and scored a run. UK’s Morgan Marr, who camein to relieve starter Keary Camunas in the bottom of the sixth, improvedto 5-3 with the win, while UL’s Jessica Rak fell to 12-6.
In the second game, UL third baseman Melissa Jacobo hit a solohome run to left center in the second inning as the Cards took a 1-0lead.
However, the Cats struck for two runs in the sixth inning totake a 2-1 lead. Dardis, who reached on a hit to left field, scored fromsecond on a throwing error by Soto. Nikki Jones, who reached on theerror, scored from first on Angus’ RBI-double to center to give UK a 2-1lead.
Camunas came in to relieve Howland in the bottom of the sixthwith the bases loaded and struck out the next two batters as UK escapedthe Cards’ threat and held on for a 2-1 win. The save was Camunas’ firstsave of the season and fifth of her career. Howland improved to 6-5 withthe win.
UK returns to action on Friday, April 7 when the Cats play hostthe South Carolina Gamecocks at the UK Softball Complex. The first gameof the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. with the second game slated for 7p.m. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, April 8at 1 and 3 p.m.
