ATHENS, Ga. – The UK softball team split the first two games of afour-game series with the Georgia Bulldogs Friday night at the Women’sAthletic Complex. The Cats captured the first game, 3-1, but fell to theDawgs in the second game, 3-2.

UK (19-17, 3-3 SEC) took the lead in the first inning of game one whenleft fielder Tiffany Kruse doubled to score Jennifer Howland from secondbase. The Cats added another run in the second when designated player ColleenBoddy tripled to right field, scoring Angie Dal Pozzo from second base togive UK a 2-0 lead.

UGA trimmed the Cats lead to 2-1 on Beth Adams’ RBI-double, scoringMonique Rhoden from second. UK added an insurance run in the sixth whenKruse, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, flied out to right field as Howlandtagged up from third, giving UK in the win in game one.

Howland, who scored two runs in the game, Kwiatkowski, and Dal Pozzo eachrecorded two hits apiece for UK, while hurler Keary Camunas, who struck outeight batters, improved to 11-9 with the victory. UGA pitcher Raquel Castillodropped to 7-10 with the loss.

In the second game, Nikki Jones broke a scoreless tie in the top of thefifth when she scored on a throwing error by UGA first baseman Lisa Schutt.The Dawgs (19-20, 3-7) answered UK in the bottom of the inning, tying thegame, 1-1.

UGA broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth when Michelle Tyree singled to leftfield, as Kim McClung and Alyssa Mauro scored to give the Dawgs a 3-1 lead.The Cats put one run across in the seventh on Andrea Eilertson’s RBI-singlethat scored Kwiatkowski. UK had a chance with runners on second and thirdbase and two out, however Colleen Boddy lined out to UGA pitcher NataliePrice to end the threat.

Jones and Kwiatkowski each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Price improved to10-6 with the win. UK freshman pitcher Morgan Marr pitched 5.1 innings,allowing just six hits and one earned run. Camunas came in to relieve Marr inthe sixth, but Marr was credited with the loss because she owned the winningrun, dropping her to 3-3 on the season.

UK and UGA will play another doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 with thefirst game set to begin at 1 p.m. The second game is slated for 3 p.m.
