LEXINGTON, Kty. – UK pitchers Keary Camunas and Jennifer Howland pitched back-to-backone-hit shutouts as the Cats swept the doubleheader with Morehead State inUK’s home opener Wednesday afternoon at the UK Softball Complex.

“I felt like we really showed up ready to play from the first pitch ingame one,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “After we played well in game one,we turned around and were ready to play from the first pitch in the secondgame, which made me very happy.

“We had two good pitching performances, we hit the ball well and playedgood defense.”

Camunas struck out eight batters, while Nikki Jones, Beth Fogle, and JamieDardis added two hits apiece as UK defeated the Eagles, 5-0, in the firstgame.

After a leadoff double by Leslie Kwiatkowski to start the second, TiffanyKruse moved Kwiatkowski to third on a sacrifice bunt. Angie Dal Pozzofollowed with a fielder’s choice, scoring Kwiatkowski from third. AndiEilertson’s RBI single to left, scored Dal Pozzo from second base. Jonessingled to center field as Eilertson scored to give the Cats a 3-0 lead.

UK, who pounded out ten hits in the game, added two more runs in thebottom of the sixth on Jen Howland’s RBI double and Jones’ run scoringtriple, as the Cats snapped a three-game losing streak. Camunas improved to4-7, while MSU’s Nikki Scott dropped to 1-3.

In the second game, UK (9-12) continued its hot hitting, taking a 4-0 leadhighlighted by Kruse’s second triple of the year.

Dal Pozzo led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right centerand advanced to third on a wild pitch by MSU pitcher Pam Crawford. DalPozzo scored as Jamie Dardis grounded out to second, increasing the UK leadto 5-0.

In the fifth, Kruse’s two-run single to center scored Jones andKwiatkowski. UK pinch hitter Sandi Dengler collected her third hit of theseason, an RBI double, scoring Kruse from first base, as the Cats captureda 8-0 victory over the Eagles (2-6) in five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Kruse led the Cats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runsscored. Howland, who improved to 4-4, recorded her team-high third shutoutof the season, while striking out three batters and walking two.

UK returns to action this weekend when the Cats play host to the KentuckyInvitational, March 11-12, at the UK Softball Complex. On Saturday, theCats will take on Northern Illinois at 11 a.m. and Evansville at 1 p.m.
