ARLINGTON, Texas — The UK softball team captured a thrilling 5-4 winoverthe Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters in eight innings on the second day of the UTATournament.

Three UK players recorded two hits apiece, while Beth Fogle scored thegame-winning run on Angie Dal Pozzo’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighthinning.

UK got on the board first in the bottom of the first when freshmanLyndsey Angus doubled to right center, scoring Beth Fogle from second.

After the Lady Techsters took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, theCats tied the game at 2-2, when junior Leslie Kwiatkowski hit her first homerun of the season, a solo shot to centerfield. Tech answered UK in the top ofthe fifth when they put two runs across to go ahead, 4-2.

The Cats tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the sixth, whenKwiatkowski tripled to score Angus from third base. Tiffany Kruse grounded outto second, scoring Kwiatkowski.

Kwiatkowski led the Cats, going 2-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs.Fogle and Angus added two hits apiece for UK.

UK’s win over the Lady Techsters earned the Cats a date with South WestTexas St. in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

The Cats built a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but threecostly UK errors allowed the Bobcats to tie the game, 2-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, UK had three players throw out athome. Onthe third out, Angus was called out at home on a very questionable call, aftera wild pitch by SW Texas St. Angus appeared to have gotten to the plate firstand was under the tag, however, the umpire called her out and the game wentinto extra innings.

Using the international tiebreaker in extra innings (placing therunner,who made the final out in the previous inning, on second to start the newinning), the Bobcats doubled two straight times, scoring the tying run and thegame-winning run.

In UK’s first game of the day, 1999 College World Series participantSouthern Miss handed the Cats a 4-1 loss, while Golden Eagle All-Americanpitcher Courtney Blades struck out 17 UK batters.

UK returns to action on Friday, Feb. 17, when the Cats travel toTucson,Ariz., to participate in the University of Arizona Tournament, Feb. 17-19.
