The University of Kentucky softball team defeated Morehead State Thursdayevening, 9-5, giving the Wildcats 20 wins this season, a new school record.
In its third year of existence, the UK softball program won 11 games in1997 and 19 in 1998. The Wildcats can build on their current record with18 games remaining this season.
UK (20-29, 3-9 SEC) pounded out eleven hits against Morehead (18-13) ledby Leslie Kwiatkowski and Michelle Bucci. Each had three hits apiece forthe Cats.
Morehead got on the board first when Dana Fohl hit a home run on the firstpitch of the game to give the Eagles 1-0 lead. It would be their only leadof the game.
The Wildcats put two runs across in the bottom of the second whileMorehead committed two of its five errors in the game.
UK came back and did most of its damage in the bottom of the fourth inningwhen they scored five runs.
Bucci doubled to start the inning and Kwiatkowski singled to score Bucci.Tiffany Kruse’s sacrifice fly scored Kwiatkowski from third base. BethFogle came across to score when Shanna Martini reached base on a error byMorehead third baseman Amy Wilkinson. Angie Dal Pozzo singled to scoreMartini. Dal Pozzo scored on a double steal while Andy Eilertson was taggedout.
UK had four extra base hits in the game and stole four bases while sixWildcats hit safely.
UK pitcher Jennifer Howland picked up the win, moving her record to 5-9this season. Natalie Massingill took the loss for the Eagles.
“I was pretty happy that even though we gave up a home run on the firstpitch of the game, we didn’t get down on ourselves,” UK head coach BethKirchner said. “We just came right back and really put it together.”
The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, when theyplay host to the Mississippi State Bulldogs at the UK Softball Complex. UKand Ole Miss will square off on Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m.
