The University of Kentucky softball team swept Kent in a doubleheader heldTuesday afternoon at the UK Softball Complex.

UK (16-22, 1-3 SEC) hammered the Golden Flashes (8-8) in the first game,9-1, in five innings because of the mercy rule. In the second game, theWildcats continued its winning ways by completing the sweep over Kent with5-0 shutout victory.

In game one, UK jumped on Kent early by scoring four runs in the bottom ofthe first inning. Pitcher Jennifer Howland scored on two errors by theGolden Flashes for UK’s first run of the game. Tiffany Kruse scored on afielders choice by Angie Dal Pozzo. Freshman Andy Eilertson picked up twoRBIs when she singled to score Shanna Martini and Leslie Kwiatkowski.

Kwiatkowski singled to start the UK third inning and then stole second andthird base. Dal Pozzo’s single scored Kwiatkowski from third, giving theWildcats a 5-0 lead.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth because of the eight-runmercy rule after UK scored four more runs to add to their lead for thegame’s score of 9-1.

The Wildcats were led at the plate by Kwiatkowski. The sophomore centerfielder went 3-3 and scored two runs. Howland and Eilertson both had twohits and scored two runs. Dal Pozzo and Michelle Bucci each had two RBIs,and all but one Wildcat hit safely in the game.

Howland held the Golden Flashes to four hits, moving her record to 4-6 onthe season.

In the second game, Keary Camunas pitched seven shutout innings whilestriking out four Kent batter en route to her eighth win of the season.

UK picked up two runs in the first inning when Kwiatkowski tripled,scoring Howland and Kruse for a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Kruse’s fourth triple of the season scored Howland.Colleen Boddy hit a single to right field, scoring Kruse for a 4-0 UK lead.

Boddy and Howland each had two hits for the Wildcats while Kwiatkowskidrove in two runs. The Wildcats are 6-3 in their last nine games.

UK returns to SEC action Friday, April 2, when the Wildcats travel toColumbia, S.C. to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in a scheduleddoubleheader for 7 and 9 p.m. The two teams will also play a doubleheaderon Saturday afternoon at 1 and 3 p.m.
