The University of Kentucky softball team lost both games to Evansville onTuesday evening at the UK Softball Complex.
UK dropped the first game, 3-0, while the Purple Aces outlasted the Catsin the second game, 8-5.
Evansville received a strong pitching performance from senior Mattie Rossas she limited UK to just four hits over seven innings. The senior struckout three Wildcats en route to the victory. The win improved her record to19-9, while UK hurler Jennifer Howland took the loss, dropping her recordto 5-11.
In the second game, Evansville took a 3-0 lead, but UK came right back inthe bottom of the first with four runs of its own. Shanna Martini’s singlescored Leslie Kwiatkowski and Howland. Angie Dal Pozzo reached on afielder’s choice as Tiffany Kruse crossed home for the Cats. Martiniscored on a delayed steal as the Cats took a 4-3 lead.
The Purple Aces regained the lead in the top of the second as UK committedtwo errors. The Cats’ two miscues led to two unearned runs as Evansvillewent up by a score of 5-4.
UK (21-34, 4-12 SEC) tied the game in the bottom of the second whenfreshman Sandi Dengler started the inning with her first career double.Howland singled to score Dengler, tying the score, 5-5.
Evansville (40-15) broke the tie in the top of the sixth with three runson four hits. The Wildcats dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 8-5.
Maggie Ross picked up the win for Evansville, movingher record to 7-2.Keary Camuans pitched six innings in relief, but took the loss, droppingher record to 12-15 this season.
Howland and Martini led the Wildcats at the plate with two hits apiece inthe second game. Both scored a run while Martini had two RBI and Howlandone RBI.
UK is now 0-4 lifetime against the Purple Aces.
The Wildcats will hit the road this weekend as they travel to Gainesville,Fla. to meet the Florida Gators in a four-game series. UK will play adoubleheader on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturdaystarting at 1 p.m.
