LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball team will begin play Friday morning in the Frost Cutlery Tournament, March 12-14, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
This is the beginning of a ten-day road trip in which the Wildcats (6-12)will participate in three different tournaments while competing in aminimum of twelve games.
UK, competing in Pool B, will play three games on Friday in Chattanoogafacing Southern Mississippi at 10 a.m., Mississippi State at 2 p.m. andMissouri at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the Wildcats are scheduled to take on Jacksonville State at10 a.m. and Centenary at 2 p.m. Single elimination play will be held onSunday.
Headlining the tournament will be the nation’s top ranked team, the UCLABruins, competing in Pool A. Five out of the twelve teams in thetournament are ranked in the nation’s top fifty.
From Chattanooga, UK heads to Myrtle Beach where the Coastal CarolinaTournament awaits, March 15-16.
UK opens play Monday, March 15, at 11 a.m. when they take on MiddleTennessee State. The Wildcats were scheduled to face MTSU earlier in theseason but the doubleheader was rained out. At 1 p.m., UK will face 17thranked Illinois-Chicago. UIC defeated the Wildcats 8-0 at the NorthCarolina Tournament on Feb. 21.
The Wildcats close the tournament on Tuesday, March 16, against CoastalCarolina at 1 p.m.
Rather than using single elimination play, tournament standing will bebased on won-loss record, head-to-head competition, and least amount ofruns allowed.
UK will finish up its ten-day swing, March 19-21, at the Ringor WinthropInvitational Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. Forty teams comprise the eightpool field.
On Friday, the Wildcats square off against Lafayette (2 p.m.) and hostschool Winthrop (8 p.m.). UK has a rematch Saturday with Illinois-Chicagoat 3 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. contest against Samford (Ala.).
“We’re excited about our upcoming trip,” UK Head Coach Beth Kirchner said.”We think if we put our game together, then we can build some good momentumgoing in to the conference season.”
Southeastern Conference play will begin for UK on March 26 when theWildcats travel to Alabama to face the Crimson Tide.
