Kentucky Softball To Overpower Rett Syndrome vs. Tennessee
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky softball team will look to overpower Rett Syndrome on Oct. 7 in its fall game vs. Tennessee. The Wildcats will be hosting the Lady Volunteers at 4:30 p.m. ET from John Cropp Stadium in Lexington.
Kentucky Softball will be offering free carnival games, face painting, postgame autographs, a facility tour of John Cropp Stadium and music by DJ Warren Peace.
“I had not been aware of Rett Syndrome and what it was before I was made aware of it when Karen Weekly at Tennessee approached me about this idea.” UK head coach Rachel Lawson said. “It’s a great chance for us to band together with Tennessee and show awareness of this syndrome to the softball fans. We are looking for a big crowd to come out to John Cropp Stadium to not only watch some great softball, but also learn about Rett Syndrome and inform the Big Blue Nation how they can help the cause.”
The Wildcats will travel to Tennessee on Oct. 14 to play Tennessee in Knoxville as part two of this event with the Lady Vols also holding a Rett Syndrome event at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. UK and Tennessee do not play in the regular season in 2019 due to the Southeastern Conference scheduling rotation.
What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett syndrome is a unique postnatal neurological disorder that is first recognized in infancy and seen almost always in girls, but can be rarely seen in boys. Rett syndrome has been most often misdiagnosed as autism, cerebral palsy, or non-specfic developmental delay. Rett syndrome is caused by mutations on the X chromosome on a gene called MECP2. There are more than 200 different mutations found on the MECP2 gene. Most of these mutations are found in eight different “hot spots.” Rett syndrome strikes all racial and ethnic groups, and occurs worldwide in 1 of every 10,000 female births.
