LEXINGTON, Kty. – The University of Kentucky softball team swept Eastern Kentucky in both games this afternoon at the UK Soccer-Softball Complex this afternoon. The Wildcats’ extended its winning streak to three games as they shutout the Colonels in both outings.

In the first game, UK (13-19) did all of its damage to EKU (9-13) in the first two innings.

Beth Fogle, who went 3-4 and stole three bases in the opening game, singled to start the first inning. Tiffany Kruse tripled to score Fogle. With the bases loaded, shortstop Angie Dal Pozzo flied out to centerfield scoring Kruse. Freshman Andy Eilertson continued the assault for UK as she singled to score Shanna Martini and Leslie Kwiatkowski. With a 4-0 lead going into the second inning, UK didn’t let up. It was Kruse who started the Wildcats’ second when she hit her second triple of the game to score Jennifer Howland and Fogle. Kwiatkowski knocked home Kruse with a base hit to give UK a 7-0 lead. Howland had her finest outing of the season for UK as she held EKU to one hit in seven innings of work as the Wildcats defeated the Colonels 7-0. Her record now stands at 3-4 on the season. At the plate, Howland went 2-4 and scored a run.

In the second game of the day, the Wildcats handed the Colonels a 8-0 loss in a game-shortened five innings due to the eight run rule. Keary Camunas pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out three EKU batters. UK pounded out thirteen hits against EKU while all but one Wildcat got a hit in the game.

The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the second and third inning to lead 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. In the fifth, UK used nine hits to score six runs to complete the sweep of the Colonels and avenged EKU’s three game sweep over the Wildcats last year. UK was again led at the plate by Kruse who went 4-4 with an RBI and scored a run. Kwiatkowski and Martini both went 2-3 and scored two runs. Martini also drove in two runs.

Howland and Camunas held EKU to three hits spanning both games, each picking up their third shutouts of the season.
